People Changing the Way We Work and Live

Machines and Artificial Intelligence are replacing a lot of things in our world and will eventually outsmart or horror of horrors, some say overpower us. However, you and I know that real people will always be ranked higher. Certainly, the unique ideas they come up with or the things they say will be forever encoded in our memories.

Here are some memorable words from

Alan Turing  “I believe that at the end of the century the use of words and general educated opinion will have altered so much that one will be able to speak of machines thinking without expecting to be contradicted.”

John Backus  “Programming in machine code was pretty lousy business to engage in, trying to figure out how to do stuff.  All what was available was a very crude assembly program and so I figured well let’s make it a little easier.”

Grace Hopper  “We have neglected looking at that information flow and it will make a tremendous difference how we design our systems of the future…We have forgotten to look at our system and that we are looking at a raw material called data.”

John Kemeny  “The greatest contribution of my colleague Tom Kurtz was convincing the Dartmouth Trustees that the Computer Centre should be looked at as exactly like the library.”

James Gosling  “When we first started one of our principles was we had a network adaptor in everything and pretty much all of our competitors thought we were completely crazy. And we weren’t.”

Adele Goldberg  “I saw programing as the grandest world for problem solving; it was just perfect for me.”

Tim Berners-Lee  “Creating the web was really an act of desperation, because the situation without it was very difficult when I was working at CERN later. Most of the technology involved in the web, like the hypertext, like the internet, multi font text objects, had all been designed already. I just had to put them together. ”

Sergey Brin  “I was fortunate to be at Stanford and I was really interested in data mining which means analyzing large amounts of data discovering the patterns and trends and at the same time Larry joined Stanford in 95 and he started downloading the web which turns out to be the most interesting data you can possibly mine.”

Larry Page  “We didn’t start to do a search engine at all. In late 1995 I started collecting the links on the web because my advisor and I decided that would be a good thing to do. We didn’t know exactly what I was going to do with it. But it seemed like no one was really looking at the links on the web. Which pages linked to which pages?”

Steve Jobs  “An iPod, a phone and an internet communicator. An iPod, a phone and an internet communicator. Are you getting it? These are not three separate devices this is one device.”

Bill Gates  “The Internet is becoming the town square for the global village of tomorrow.”

Mark Zuckerberg  “People are trying to communicate in a certain way on Facebook – they share information with their friends, they learn about what their friends are doing.”

Tom Armitage  “So often to an untrained eye the language we program computers in what looks like bastardized English or strings of unfamiliar punctuation; they look really like a code. This is not the fault of computers because these languages are designed by humans. They are designed by humans for other humans to use.”

Elon Musk  “There have to be reasons that you get up in the morning and you want to live. Why do you want to live? What’s the point? What inspires you? What do you love about the future? If the future does not include being out there among the stars and being a multi-planet species, I find that incredibly depressing.”
