The first few weeks at your new job are going well and the euphoria is probably ebbing with the reality of the place and your role.
To help you as a new hire here are a few tips
Be on time
The worst thing you can do is come to work late as a newbie. So do prepare the day before (the clothes, your transport and set the alarm) to be on time and do continue to do so. If you know you’ll be late or cutting it close, let people know in advance.
Do not turn up late and silently take your position because people will have seen you. Settle in and then at the first opportunity, apologize to your superiors and colleagues for being late.
Being on time also means finishing work on time. When given an assignment do finish it on time. This goes for set assignments or promises and deadlines given to customers, meet those too.
Greet People
You are part of an organization now, so it’s good practice to greet people as they come in, and be prepared to make introductions. Introduce yourself if no one’s making introductions and reintroduce yourself over the coming days even after being introduced to people as some may not remember your name or may not have been present.
Even if you’re not expected to, go around and introduce yourself to people that you have not been introduced to and don’t forget those that do the cleaning and take care of the security in the workplace.
You can make a good impression by introducing yourself and letting people know who you are, and you can start building your work relationships from there.
Know Your Position
The title you have may give you a clue on what your position is and is a good indicator of what your role will be in the work place. If not, consult your terms of reference and the job description. Stick to the terms and work according to the description as much as possible.
When in doubt talk with your supervisor, manager or boss to get an understanding of what you are expected to do or contribute to the work place. This is important as over-time and when it comes to setting boundaries of what you are expected to do.
